The van Nie family history can be traced back to two brothers who were taylors in the Dutch province of Gelderland in the late 17th century. One of the brothers, Antony, is the ancestor of a branch of the family which eventually lived in and around Amsterdam. The other brother, Jan, is the ancestor of a branch which came to live near Utrecht in and around the village of Bunnik. In December of 1958, Huibertus van Nie emigrated from the Netherlands with his wife, Francina Klamer and their 4 children, to Canada. A fifth child was born in Canada. These five children produced a total of ten children of their own along with several grandchildren.

Huibertus (Bart) van Nie died on 14 November 2021.
